Apple Extends Their Branding to Include Games and Game Hardware: iGame? PDF Print E-mail

Yesterday the trademark blog Trademork posted an article showing that Apple, makers of the iPhone, iPod, and all things Mac, filed to extend and protect their trademark to include:

"hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD game machines; electronic educational game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games"

So, could we be feeling the rumblings of an iGame type device? Or does this merely apply to in-house development of iPod and iPhone games? Apple has been hiring game developers since as early as February of last year, so we do know that something game related will be coming out with a white apple logo on it, but it's up in the air as to what. The iPod is a good, if not overly simplistic, platform for video games. Anyone who's played Peggle on their iPod knows this. What may be interesting is to see what games come out for the iPhone and iPod touch when the iPhone/touch SDK (standard developer kit) drops this month. Well, if it even drops this month, as new rumors suggest a delay. With the large multi-touch screen, the iPhone could easily have quality DS-esque games, and maybe even DS ports.

I personally doubt seeing Apple go full-bore into the gaming world with their own stand-alone platform, either as a hand-held or a console. With the stiff competition currently in the market, and the tendency for Apple to not be a company used to losing money on hardware, the impetus just doesn't appear to be there. Games sold through iTunes for current hardware would be the best way to go for Apple in terms of finances.

Yup, I could barely believe it as well...but they have a huge base and they did a great job marketing it...but the PSP and DS are popular as hell. Friend from mmo social network thinks they are too late to get in the game as well, but if they have the user base, i dont see y not.
