Today marks the release of the DVD for The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, a documentary focusing on a world record rivalry in Donkey Kong. It is a fantastic film, focusing on the lives of two men and the world of competitive and classic gaming that binds them. For a documentary, there's a very dramatic feel to the story, as though the two main characters are not average people, but rather protagonist and antagonist, each vying to see the other vanquished in an 8-bit blaze of glory. Why is this relevant, you may ask? Find out after the jump.
It's relevant for two reasons. Primarily, I remember hearing someone say that it's the best video-game movie to date, which I believe is accurate and very purchase-worthy. Just because it's a real story and doesn't involve Uwe Boll doesn't mean that it isn't in the same category. Secondly, after watching it, I had a very strong urge to play Donkey Kong, which I'm sure has been felt by many others. The only problem with this is that the game is not available on Xbox Live Arcade. Call me whatever you want for being outraged, but MS could make a serious dollar. After searching the internet, one can find several flash versions of the game, but when's the last time you could geniunely feel satisfaction from a flash game? Chain Factor?
All it would take is an arcade port of the game with maybe a small advertisement for the movie when signed in and I can almost guarantee it would sell. The simple prospect of having achievements and a worldwide online leaderboard for a game in which we see two people dedicating their lives to playing would be amazing. If for no other reason then to give us a legal way to play a perfect arcade port, get on it Microsoft!
