I imagine that right now, you're feeling a bit like Alice – tumbling down the rabbit hole? I see it in your eyes. You have look of a man who accepts what he sees because he is expecting to wake up. Unfortunately, this is far from the truth. You're not dreaming or jacked into the Matrix. Activision really did announce Guitar Hero: Aerosmith – an entire game dedicated to one band of debatable quality.
From the press release:
Steven Tyler says, "Any band that can go from 'Don't Want to Miss A Thing' (Aerosmith's #1 smash hit) to the ass-kicking 'Sweet Emotion' to the cheekiness of 'Love in an Elevator,' to the classic ballad 'Dream On' shows why Activision chose us to headline this game based on the diversity of the Aerosmith catalog. Not only is songwriting a bitch, but then it goes and has puppies."
Activision, I know the Guitar Hero series is your money-making baby now, but listen carefully...
...Don't. Make. This. Game.
In fact, just stop making Guitar Hero games altogether. With GH3, you've managed to throw away many of the things that made the series fun to begin with: the atmosphere, the note charts, the humor, and even the timing on the strums. With Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, you're effectively killing one of very few selling points you have left in the series – it's soundtrack.
Guitar Hero 3 has 73 songs, all from different bands. That's 73 bands all with differing sounds that make them stand out. With this latest entry in the series, that number drops to only a few – Aerosmith and the bands that opened for them or were inspired by them. How many exactly is hard to say, but I'm betting that number will be of a single digit. Rest assured that Aerosmith fans will be the only ones looking to buy this game. I mean really, Revolution X was horrible – what can one expect from a game who's face looks like this:
It seems that Activision already knows it's going to fail, as they've gone so far as to have Aerosmith justfy why they're so awesome in the press release. That's not cocky at all -- telling everyone why you're the greatest band ever. Oh well, at least this gives Itagaki something to do in between sexual harassment lawsuits and making games.
