Page 1 of 2 Hello! Welcome to the first (and hopefully) monthly installment of Dastardly Digital's Divine Deals! With a rampancy of ADD fueling the majority of internet communities, it's tough to find time to look back at the games one has missed. We often tell ourselves that Game X is fun, but not worth sixty dollars. I am here to tell you that it's time to take another look. Stop playing Burnout and No More Heroes for a few minutes and check out some of these older titles that may have fallen off your radar to become affordable!
Shadowrun (360, Vista) -- $30 new
Shadowrun's release last summer saw many gamers disappointed and outraged as they saw one of their favorite franchises converted into an experiment for Microsoft. The game certainly has it's flaws – a general lack of variety. Only 9 maps, only 8 weapons, and “only” 60 dollars. Now that it's a much more affordable game, it can be easy to recommend due to the simple fact that it's fun. You'll quickly realize that the maps are well designed and while there aren't many weapons, they are balanced out by several magic and tech abilities which can be mixed and used to create a unique experience almost every time. The gameplay may revolve around the same Counter-Strike formula that we've seen before, but it's still a very entertaining one.
Stuntman: Ignition (PS3, 360) -- $30 new
If you were playing anything this holiday season, odds are it was either Rock Band, Call of Duty 4, or Halo 3. During the peak of this holiday hype hysteria, Stuntman: Ignition was released onto an unsuspecting public, and was consequently ignored. A true shame, as this is one of the most entertaining games that I played this holiday season. Your average scene takes two or three minutes to complete, but when you do so, there's quite the sense of intense accomplishment. The game gives a fantastic sense of being an action star as you hit a jump over exploding cars while trying to dodge gunfire and missiles in the air, while landing under a passing bus to make a turn. You can even create your own stunt concoctions with an editor that also allows you to share them with friends, who you can also challenge to online stunt courses. $60 may have been a bit much for a game that's rather short, but it's almost too much fun for $30.
Zack and Wiki (Wii) -- $30 new Written by Ben Fidler
I've only made it through about half of Zack and Wiki, but that's not for any lack of quality on its part so much as my schedule, game ADD, and Wii-commandeering roommates. What I have played has been every bit as good as the internet hype has claimed. The point-and-click adventure style obviously works well on the Wii and the puzzles are a blast to solve. The ever-hyped "most realistic use of the Wiimote yet" isn't quite what I'd wanted and it can get a bit gimmicky, but there are still some interesting uses of the controller here that haven't been featured in other games. There's even some replayability here if you care about scores. You get scored based on how quickly you can complete levels (or how many tries it takes before you find the right step in the puzzle).
Don't let its questionable style choice coupled with probably one of the worst titles you could slap on a serious game (one word away from being "Zack and Cody") deter you from checking it out.
